How do you do gifts in your family? Do you do Dirty Santa? Draw names? Pick-a-Charity? No Gifts Except for Kids?
We do a little of each. On one side, we’re drawing names. On another, Dirty Santa. On still another, we’re all making (or buying) desserts — cakes, candies, whatever — and then we’ll all fix ourselves a basket of the collected offerings and enjoy.
I can’t remember gift-giving ever being this … complicated. Part of it is I’m an adult now, with a family (and a budget) and I’m now part of the giving, and not just part of the getting. Part of it is that, as families (and companies) grow, they become inherently more complicated. Isn’t that one of the laws of something you learn in school: In a closed system, entropy must increase?
But it’s also possible that part of it may be the current economy, finding its way home in the way we work out our holiday traditions. What do you think?
