Be Nice or Be Nicer

“What are you mad about today, Eddie?” So began a popular radio spot in the state of Texas a few years back and then Eddie Childs was come on with some common sense strategies for solving many human dilemmas.  I think about Eddie every now and then when in the course of human events peoples actions remind me that I’m getting old and set in my ways.  It seems that numerous times throughout the hours of my busy schedule I hear my Mother telling a younger version of me to “Be Nice.” Then I hear little Larry asking his Mother; “What if they’re not being nice?”  To which Mother would always reply; “Be Nicer!”  It’s not bad advice.  That brings us to the subject of “Customer Service” or what seems to be all too common, the lack of customer service.  To the consumer who has a complaint (that was me this time) my Mom would say “Be Nice.”  But to the one rendering service (I’m sure my time is coming) Mom would say, “Be Nicer!”  I guess this could apply in all incidents of human relationships.  I always wondered what would have happened to his ratings if one morning when they said: “What are you mad about today, Eddie?” he would have replied; “Nothing.”  Wouldn’t that have been nice.  Well I guess if we all work together on this thing we can all have a “Nicer” day.
